What Is AI? A Beginner’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence in 2026

Welcome to the very first Future Fridays post. Every Friday, we will share simple stories and tips about new technology. Our goal is to help you feel safe and ready for the future. Today, we start with the most important question.

What is AI?

DEFINITION

Helping you understand the new world

You might have heard the letters "AI" on the news or from friends. AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. But what does that really mean?

Think of AI as a very fast student. This student has read almost every book, website, and article ever written. Because the student has read so much, they have learned how to find patterns.

When you ask an AI a question, it does not "think" like a human. Instead, it looks at its patterns. It asks itself: "Based on everything I have read, what is the most likely answer to this person's question?"

It is like a very advanced version of the "auto-complete" on your phone. When you start typing a text message, your phone tries to guess the next word. AI does this same thing, but it can guess entire stories, emails, or even create pictures.

In 2026, AI is no longer a secret tool for scientists. It is a tool for everyone. You can use it to work faster, learn new things, and solve problems in your community.

SAFETY

Keeping your information private and secure

At Alaska Digital Partners, we believe you should only use technology if it keeps you safe. This is why we focus on responsible AI training.

When you use AI, you are often "talking" to a computer through a website. It is important to remember these rules:

  1. Do not share secrets. Never tell an AI your passwords, your social security number, or private details about your family or health.
  2. Check the facts. Sometimes the "student" makes a mistake. Because AI only looks for patterns, it can sometimes share information that sounds true but is actually wrong. Always read what the AI writes before you share it with others.
  3. Use trusted tools. Only use AI programs that are well-known and respected.

Are you worried about your data? That is normal. We teach people how to use these tools while keeping their personal lives private. You can learn more about staying safe in our Cybersecurity Training.

PRODUCTIVITY

Working smarter for your business and community

How can you use artificial intelligence for small business owners? AI is like having a helpful assistant who never gets tired. It can help you with the small tasks so you can focus on the big ones.

Here is how to use AI for productivity:

  • Writing Emails: If you find it hard to start an email, you can tell an AI: "Write a friendly email to a customer explaining that their order is ready for pickup." The AI will give you a draft in seconds.
  • Translating Languages: AI is very good at moving words from one language to another. This can help our tribal communities share stories or important news with more people.
  • Organizing Schedules: AI can look at your calendar and help you find the best time for a community meeting or a fishing trip.
  • Managing Grants: For many organizations, writing grant applications takes a long time. AI can help you organize your ideas and make your writing clearer.

Using practical AI for business means you have more time for your family and your traditional way of life. It takes the "busy work" away.

TYPES

Choosing the right tool for the job

Not all AI is the same. In 2026, we mostly use three types of tools:

  1. Text AI: These are like chatbots. You type a question, and they type back. They are great for writing, summarizing long documents, or brainstorming ideas.
  2. Image AI: These tools can create a picture from your words. If you need a logo for a new community project, you can describe it, and the AI will draw it for you.
  3. Automation AI: These tools connect different apps. For example, if someone fills out a form on your website, the AI can automatically send them a "Thank You" email and add their name to your list.

We offer Artificial Intelligence Training to help you choose which of these tools is right for you. You don't need to be a computer expert to learn AI for work. You just need to be curious.

TRUTH

Seeing AI as a helper, not a master

Is AI going to replace humans? No.

AI cannot feel. It cannot understand the deep history of our land or the traditions of our people. It only knows patterns. It is a tool, just like a hammer or a fishing net. A hammer cannot build a house by itself. It needs a person with a plan.

When you use generative AI for small business, you are still the boss. You provide the plan. You provide the heart. The AI just helps you finish the work faster.

ACTION

Starting your journey today

How do you begin?

Start small. Think of one task that takes you too much time. Maybe it is writing a weekly newsletter or organizing your receipts. Then, look for a simple AI tool to help.

Do you have questions about where to start? We are here to help.

Check out our Live Virtual Training sessions. We walk you through every step in a way that is easy to understand. We keep our groups small so everyone can ask questions and feel comfortable.

FUTURE

Looking ahead together

This is only the beginning. AI is changing every day, and we want to make sure no one in Alaska is left behind. Technology should serve us, not the other way around.
